MVT Provides Future-Proof Fiber For Your Internet Connection

MVT is committed to making your life better by providing better speeds and reliability continually as we update our network. Your convenience and ease of use are our top priority. As we begin a new year, we often reflect upon our past and make goals for our future. As 2019 begins, I'd like to spend some time reflecting upon the evolution of internet speeds in Moapa Valley.

The graph below shows just how far we've all come together. We went from 9,600 bit dial-up modems back in 1996 to 1,000,000,000 bit (gigabit) fiber internet in 2017. Today, we're thrilled to offer you internet that is 104,167 times faster than what was available in 1996.

At MVT, we use two technologies to deliver Internet: DSL and fiber. Our maximum DSL speeds are generally limited to between 30,000,000 and 100,000,000 bits/sec (30 Mbps 100 Mbps). The physics of copper telephone wire don't allow for anything much faster at reasonable distances. By contrast, our maximum fiber speed is 1,000,000,000 bits/sec or 1 Gbps. Anyone with fiber internet has access to this speed, whereas with DSL we are limited by distance.

What will the future bring? In 20 years, will we see another 100,000x increase in speeds? I doubt it, but it would be fun to offer Petabit speeds (100,000 times as fast Gigabit!) and I believe that fiber has the capacity to do it. That's why fiber is considered future-proof, which is good news for all of us as we look forward from 2019!
