This month, MVT's "Meet Moapa Valley" video series introduces viewers to Erika Whitmore and her work with Moapa Valley REACH.

Moapa Valley is home to a large special needs population. According to Erika, "There are at least 50 families that have kids with some type of special needs, everything from Down's Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy to severe autism."

The challenges of raising a child with special needs often leads parents to feel isolated and alone. That's why Erika and a group of fellow mothers worked to create Moapa Valley REACH, a resource for parents and family members of special needs children. "We needed to do something so people don't feel like they're all alone," she continues. "There are other people they can turn to if they're feeling like they can't handle a certain problem, or go one more day."

"Having a special needs son or daughter or family member makes you look at the world through different eyes," says Erika. "You have a soft place in your heart for people that are living with disability. This community has been a blessing to my family and my kids. People look out for each other. It's a very special place because of the community."

See Erika and the Moapa Valley REACH video at and feel free to share your stories of Erika and REACH on MVT's Facebook page or YouTube channel. Stay tuned for more videos in this series.
